Mankato Venues Spread Holiday Cheer with Live Music on Christmas Eve

KEYC NEWS 12 (Dec. 24, 2018) – Nothing highlights the Christmas and holiday season like tradition.

At Pub 500 in Mankato, a 15–year tradition continued with a performance from a Dixieland jazz band called the Blue Ox Jazz Babies.

“It’s a wonderful tradition. A lot of these people have been in here every year from the beginning,” said Pub 500 Owner Tom Frederick. “I talked to a table over there that just discovered it four years ago and they’ve been coming every year. It’ll be a lot of fun today, it’s just a great way to get in the Christmas spirit and have a good time.”

While some attend the concert before heading off to visit family, others make it a part of their agenda.

“I’ve been coming here for about five years now with my dad, it’s kind of our tradition on Christmas Eve,” said Pub 500 patron Rachel Carpenter. “We get away for a little bit before we go do the presents and the whole family thing, it’s a lot of fun.”

A few blocks down the road in Old Town, the Coffee Hag was hosting their own holiday music event featuring harpist Amy Korteum,  which is another Mankato holiday tradition going on five years running.

“It’s a great day to be available to customers because they can meet their friends here before they go to meet their families,” said The Coffee Hag’s owner Jenn Melby-Kelley. “Some people don’t have anywhere to go, so they can come here, listen to some Christmas music and sing. It’s a really good time.”

Both venues plan to continue bringing some holiday cheer on Christmas Eve for years to come. Until then, you’ll have to wait another year to find out.

KEYC NEWS 12 (Nov. 30, 2018) – As the month comes to a close, so does “No Shave November. Men attended Pub 500 to say goodbye to their facial hair.

To celebrate the end of “No-Shave November” men got their ‘staches & beards shaved down. Including our very own Dion Cheney!

“We’re raising awareness for men’s health and men’s cancer, particularly testicular and prostate cancer so we’ve got survivors here tonight we’ve got people here that want to spread the word and help our men get to understand their health better and go get checked out at the doctor, so that hopefully we can catch cancer early and cure it,” Grow MANkato co-founder Chris Harstad said,

All funds raised will go to Grow MANkato to help support the gift cards in the JZ Cancer Fund Care Box.

“Jonathan Zierdt and I are the co-founders of Grow MANkato and he’s still battling his cancer right now so the funds that we raise through Grow MANkato go to his foundation that he created and his foundation has a care box that’s given to every single cancer patient here in Mankato. Our funds go to help fund gift cards that are placed within that box so we’re helping our local cancer patients here,” Harstad added.

This is the fifth year for Grow MANkato and each year they hope to raise more money for the cause.
